Another Colonia Home Hit in a Big $$$ Burglary

A Morningside Road home in the Colonia section of Woodbridge was ransacked Monday and more than $34,000 in watches and jewelry were stolen.

Less than a week after a burglary where thieves made off with thousands of dollars in jewelry, Colonia was again the scene of another high dollar theft. Burglars hit a Morningside Road residence Monday where they grabbed more than $34,000 in expensive watches, jewelry, and designer handbags, said.

Law enforcement was called to the two-family home at approximately 6:47 pm on April 16, where they met the building's owner, who occupied the second floor of the structure and discovered the burglary when he returned home from work.

Thieves had ransacked the apartment, using pillowcases from the bed to hold their stolen loot. Police said they had snapped up $20,000 in jewelry, including a diamond engagement ring and wedding ring, from a jewelry box. Four expensive watches worth $8,500, including a $3,000 Tag Heuer watch, had also been stolen.

The owner had stored a collection of designer handbags on the top of an armoire. Police said that the expensive purses, with a value of about $4,300, had been taken as well. The cheaper handbags were left behind.

Cellphones and a laptop computer had also been taken in the heist.

Police said the tenant on the first floor of the Morningside Road residence had also had his apartment burglarized.

This theft comes less than a week after another Colonia home on Chain O Hills Road had been burglarized. The thieves in that robbery, police theorize, may have used a sledgehammer to crash in a steel door to the front of the home. Thousands of dollars in jewelry were taken.

Police are still investigating both incidents.
