The Government's Hold on the Education Monopoly

The public option of any service, without the benefit of competition in the free market, has always and will always produce an inferior product. Think education.

When a company is considered so successful as to be considered a monopoly, what does the government do?  Condemn and prosecute it.  Remember the break-up of AT&T and the worldwide stink over Microsoft?

Why does government attack what it perceives to be a monopoly?  That's right - to give the competition a chance to compete, give consumers choices, and drive quality up and prices down.  So what does government do when it comes to its own monopolies? It tries to drive out competition. Think public option: schools!

If a private school has a failing record in New Jersey, the Dept. of Education is quick to shut it down.  If entire school districts - think inner cities - fail for generations, what do the progressives in government and the liberals on the court do? Send more money!  Billions and billions for years and tears, decades and decades -- the bucks must stop here.

Right now, people of every political stripe are fighting for pending legislation called the Opportunity Scholarship Act that will help open up a marketplace of ideas and new approaches to learning.  I went to a family day event to stand up and be counted among parents, teachers, and civic leaders united in this great cause.

If you want an education on the education industry, see the documentary by Bob Bowdon called 'The Cartel.'  It will make an activist out of you.
