Obituary: Stephen L. Meszaros, 90, of Avenel

Meszaros was the beloved "Steve the Scorekeeper" who served for years for the baseball team of the Woodbridge Recreation Department.

Stephen L. Meszaros, 90, of Avenel, passed away on Friday, June 22, at Marian Manor Health Care Center in Stafford, Virginia. 

Born in Perth Amboy, he was a lifetime resident of Avenel and was a Communicant of and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Avenel. He was also a member of the . 

Mr. Meszaros was a United States Navy Veteran serving in World War II. His heroic efforts during his service to his country allowed his fellow servicemen to safely reach the beaches with limited casualties. 

In the 70s and 80s, he was known as "Steve The Scorekeeper" for the baseball team of the Woodbridge Recreation Department. Later, he was employed as a custodian with the W and worked as a school bus driver for Howard Bus Company. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Fundock Meszaros, who died in 1999, and by his son, Stephen Meszaros, who died in 1956. 

He is survived by a sister, Margaret Letts of South Amboy; two daughters, Barbara Evonitz and her husband Richard of Fredericksburg, VA, and Susan Knodel and her husband Walter of Gold Canyon, AZ; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren with a seventh on the way. 

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 27 from 4 pm to 8 pm  at 399 Avenel Street in Avenel. A Mass of Resurection will take place in his honor on Thursday, June 28 at 10 am at .

Interment will follow at in Colonia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, VA 22407.
