Obituary: Joseph Hrycyszyn, 81

The Colonia resident passed away May 19 in Scotch Plains.


Joseph Hrycyszyn passed away Saturday, May 19, at Ashbrook Care and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains. He was 81 years old.

Born in Tremgowla, Poland, he resided in Elizabeth before moving to the Colonia section of 36 years ago. He was employed as an assembler with General Motors Corporation in Linden for over 25 years before retiring in 1995; and was previously employed by Schrafft’s in New York City.

Mr. Hrycyszyn was a communicant of in Colonia; and was a United States Army veteran.

A walking atlas, he loved traveling and animals; enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren; and, since his illness, missed his daily three mile walks in Rahway Park and all the people he would meet along the way. Anybody who met him would never forget him.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Maria Chorociej Hrycyszyn, in 2008; and a loving sister, Maria.

He is survived by his daughters, Diane York, Christine Angowski and Marie Zdobinski, all of Colonia; three grandchildren, Melissa and Jessica Angowski and Dylan York; and a brother, Jan Hrycyszyn.

Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, May 23 at 8:30 am from the Costello-Greiner Funeral Home at 399 Avenel Street in Avenel.

A Funeral Liturgy will follow at 9:30 am at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Colonia. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Newark. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm at the funeral home.
