Sign Up for the 'Build a Rain Barrel' Workshop

Have you heard of rain barrels? They collect rain water from the roof. The barrel holds about 50 gallons which can be used to water gardens or wash cars. Learn how to build one.


Have you heard of Rain Barrels ? A rain barrel is placed under a gutter's downspout next to a house, to collect rain water from the roof. The barrel holds approximately 50 gallons of water which can be used to water gardens, wash cars, the dog etc.. Rain water harvesting can help save money on your water bill, prevent basement flooding, and reduce flooding in local rivers and streams.

Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County will present 2 Build a Rain Barrel workshops at the EARTH Center, in Davidson's Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave, South Brunswick.  They will take place on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:30PM and Wednesday, April 10 at 6:30 PM.

Participants will build their own rain barrel and learn how to install it at home.To register in advance or for program details call 732-398-5275. Class size is limited, so register early to insure a space.

This workshop is part of a research project conducted by Rutgers Cooperative Extension to determine whether rain barrels encourage adoption of other environmental best management practices by residents. The 2013 gardening workshop series at the EARTH Center is a great opportunity for those who cannot commit to the regular sessions of the Master Gardener program, to get the horticultural information they need from a local source.
