Commuter Problems: NJ Transit Is Having Train Delays of Up to 90 Minutes

An early morning derailment has been playing havoc with train schedules to NY all day Tuesday.

An early morning derailment near Penn Station is causing headaches for commuters Tuesday night.

NJ Transit is reporting that service on the Northeast Corridor line and the North Jersey Coast spur that reaches shore points is experiencing delays from 60 to 90 minutes. This affects all trains originating in or leaving from New York, as well as stops in between.

The Northeast Corridor line is a direct route from New York to Trenton. Woodbridge is the first stop from New York on the North Jersey Coast line, which passed through the township with stops to Bayhead.

Holders of commuter passes can escape New York by bus. NJ Transit is honoring rail tickets and passes on its buses, private carrier buses, and on PATH trains in Newark, Hoboken and New York for the remainder of the day.

There were no injuries among the 300 passengers in the derailment on the train which departed from New York at 7:53 am.  Two of the ten cars were askew on the tracks. Another train arrived and took on the stranded passengers by 9:18 am, and they continued on the original route to Trenton. The derailed train was stuck just outside the Hudson River tunnel.

Train service has been running late all day, as NJ Transit authorities try to deal with the derailed train cars. Transit authorities said that there will be limited service to and from Penn Station via the Hudson River tunnel until further notice.
