After Irene, NJ Transit Rail Service Resumes This Morning

Service along Northeast Corridor line from Trenton to New Brunswick and North Jersey Coast Line through Woodbridge is back in service.

For the first time since Hurricane Irene hit New Jersey, NJ Transit rail service is being restored - but riders should expect delays.

Service was suspended on the Northeast Corridor line between Trenton and New Brunswick because of Irene-related flooding. After running several successful test train runs Tuesday night, NJ Transit said in a statement that rail service between Trenton and New York Penn Station will resume Wednesday morning, Aug. 31.

Passengers on the Northeast Corridor line should expect 30 to 45 minute delays because of ongoing flood-related signal issues.

The North Jersey Coast Line, which runs from Bay Head to Woodbridge before joining the main rail lines to Trenton and New York, is also operating, but with 15 to 20 minute delays in both directions. Some 3500-series trains to and from South Amboy have been cancelled.

Bus service is running well in some areas, and sporadically, with detours and cancellations, in other areas - again, this is due to the after effects of Hurricane Irene flooding.

In other parts of the state, light rail service and some regular rail service has resumed on a limited basis, subject to delays. Visit njtransit.com for the entire schedule.

To make it easier for passengers to pick a mode of travel in their area, NJ Transit is honoring cross platform service. That is where passengers can use a ticket purchased for one mode of travel, such as train fare, and use it on another form of transport, such as a bus ride.

NJ Transit advises anyone taking mass transit to go to the njtransit.com website or call 973-275-5555 for service information before they start their trip.
