Golf Is Serious Medicine in Rehabilitation

JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute held a golf clinic to teach the disabled and medical professionals how golf can be a new lease on life.

Golf isn't just for the big sportsman; it can be a great means of rehabilitation for the physically disabled. So said experts at  (JRI) & JFK/JRI Prosthetic & Orthotics Lab, when they sponsored two golf seminars along with the National Amputee Golf Association.

The clinics - a First Swing Seminar and a Learn to Golf Clinic - were set up to entice health and golf professionals as well as the physically challenged to consider all the good golfing can do.

The training was held at the Inman Golf Center in Edison.

The hands-on clinic was designed to educate rehabilitation and golf professionals in the instruction of adaptive golf techniques for physically challenged individuals. The program encouraged JRI patients, and rehabilitation professionals to mix together and participate in the lifelong leisure activity of golf. Participants reviewed basic and adaptive golf techniques which assist in improvement of functional skills, range of motion and balance.

At JRI, the Prosthetic and Orthotic Team and highly skilled physical and occupational therapists  train  the physically challenged to overcome their disability through innovative approaches in a goal-oriented atmosphere.
