Avenel Street School Administrator Reinstated

Former Avenel Street School principal Dara Kurlander will return to the school district as a supervisor.

Suspended Avenel Street School principal Dara Kurlander will return to the district following the acceptance of a settlement between the her and the Board of Education.

At its Thursday meeting, the board voted to accept the settlement, which sees Kurlander returning to the district as a supervisor.

Board attorney Jonathan Busch said the acceptance of the settlement will allow the district to "no longer pay her to collect a salary while she sits at home."

Kurlander was suspended with pay in August 2012 following a cheating scandal involving Avenel Street School and Ross Street School that resulted in the suspension of five educators and the firing of one.

Board member Brian Molnar said the cheating allegations are an "emotional topic," but he felt the acceptance of the settlement was the "responsible" thing to do.

The allegations, which have been documented in a report by the state Department of Education's Office of Fiscal Accountability and Compliance (OFAC) have been "extensively" investigated by the district, Busch said.

The investigation is ongoing, he said.
