According to its website, http://www.proprietaryhouse.org, The Proprietary House served as the home of the last appointed Royal Governor of New Jersey, William Franklin. He and his wife lived in the house in Perth Amboy from 1774 to 1776. The building is owned by the state and a portion of it is operated as a museum by the Proprietary House Association.
