St. George Festival Brought Greek Food & Culture to Area Residents

The food was fab at the 38th annual Greek festival.

Opa!

Greek food, music, and culture turned out en masse at the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Piscataway, as the church hosted its annual Greek Festival.

Running the course of the entire weekend, the festival featured all manner of Greek food, from spanakopita (spinach and cheese pie) to mousaka (baked eggplant) to loukoumades (a personal favorite, honey puffs – think Italian zeppolies, sans powdered sugar and drizzled in honey).  And of course, there’s ouzo – a clear, strong, anise-flavored liquor nicknamed “Greek Fire Water.”

While the festival drew Greeks from all over the area, you didn't have to be of the heritage to enjoy the food, music, and culture.  “The food here is awesome,” said Jamie Marsh, who attended the festival Saturday afternoon and was enjoying a gyro at a table outdoors.  “We’ve been coming for four or five years now.  I’d never had Greek food before he took me,” she said, pointing to her husband across the table.

“Neither of us is actually Greek,” Mark said.  “Though I guess everyone here is today.”

The St. George church, located a short walk from the Rutgers football stadium, has been putting on the festival for 38 years. Information on the event can be found at the church’s website.
