Spectacular Fireworks Show Dazzles on the Sewaren Waterfront

Thousands pack the Alvin P. Williams Memorial Park to enjoy an afternoon of outdoors entertainment, capped by the annual fireworks show.

Woodbridge held its annual Independence Day celebration Friday night, drawing thousands to Alvin P. Williams Memorial Park on the waterfront in Sewaren.

The weather was perfect - warm, but not overbearingly so.Β  Families packed the park, with kids playing on the jungle gym, dads and sons playing catch, and some just enjoying the fresh air and catching up on some reading.

"It's just too beautiful of a day to be inside," said Jim Simonelli, who debated not going to the park with his sons this year because of traffic concerns.Β  "It just feels like summer."

Woodbridge Idol winner Kelly Peterson performed the National Anthem, with the Party Dolls providing the musical entertainment as day turn to dusk.

But the big draw, naturally, was the fireworks.Β  The show started well after dark, lighting up the night sky as patriotic tunes like "God Bless The USA" by Lee Westwood mingled with more contemporary music such as Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA," and classics like Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World."Β

"It looks like Niagra Falls!" exclaimed one excited young boy, as gold fireworks shimmered down the sky.Β  The show ended with a synchronized bang, drawing applause from the crowd gathered in the park and on boats docked in the marina nearby.
