Route 35 Broken Water Main Causes 'Boil Water' Alert

Residents from various areas of Woodbridge and Edison are being cautioned to boil their water for the next two days.

Woodbridge residents, boil your water!

A broken water main near Woodbridge High School early this morning has necessitated the issuance of a 'boil water' alert from Middlesex Water Company, the utility that provides water to homeowners.

The alert affects residents of Fords, Avenel, and Woodbridge Proper as well as the Clara Barton section of Edison.

The broken main may also affect water pressure in these areas, the company said in a release. The water company crews are working currently to fix the break.

The notification to boil tap water before drinking it is a precaution, they said. The alert remains for the next 48 hours.

Customers are being advised to boil their tap water used for drinking for a period of one minute, not including the time it takes to come to a complete boil. The water should then be allowed to cool before being consumed.

Water should be boiled before using water for: drinking, cooking or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets and all other consumption. Water does not have to be boiled for showering, washing dishes or clothes.

People with impaired immune systems, those with infants or the elderly, may wish to use other sources of water other than water from a faucet, Middlesex Water said, because of the potential for harm.
