Route 1 in Edison Completely Closed This Weekend

All lanes northbound and southbound will be closed until Monday morning.

If you’re traveling on Route 1 in Edison this weekend, you might want to think again. All lanes Northbound and Southbound will be diverted around a construction zone from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The detours are necessary as NJDOT removes and replaces the track bed and rails in order to form the new grade crossing that should accommodate trains and cars on Route 1 in a safe manner for the next 25 years. Detours will be created and marked in order for all businesses and destinations to be accessible during construction, but motorists should plan alternate routes or be prepared for delays during this time.

“Officials carefully reviewed the project before concluding there is no feasible way to perform the work in a manner that maintains even limited opportunities for motorists to travel through the construction zone,” according to NJ DOT.

The construction spans across Route 1 both northbound and southbound at a location north of Old Post Road and south of Middlesex County Route 531, or .7 milers south of the interchange of Route 1 and I-287.

In the case of rain, construction will be postponed to the following weekend.
