Not Just For Moms: Have Fun with Fondue!

The Melting Pot heats it up with an incomparable menu

Call the babysitters, ladies, because I have a restaurant you will not want to miss!  Hey, any place where you start your meal with melted cheese and end it with melted chocolate is worth paying a babysitter for, in my opinion.

We’re talking about The Melting Pot in the heart of Somerville. I know Somerville may seem like a bit of a drive for dinner, but really, it’s just a hop, skip and jump up 287, and, trust me, this particular dinner is totally worth it.

The Melting Pot’s big claim to fame is fondue. It is the only fondue restaurant I know of in this area, in fact. (If you know of another one, let me know and I’ll check it out!) Fondue dining might seem a little intimidating, but the friendly staff at The Melting Pot take all the guess work out of it, explaining every thing on the menu clearly, and answering any questions you might have.

I highly recommend their Big Night Out packages, which rotate (my favorite was A Taste of France. But I’m a sucker for all things Parisian). With the package, you’ll get a cheese fondue, a salad, an entree (which consists of bite sized meats and seafood brought to your table where you cook them in a fondue pot), and of course, one of their fabulous dessert fondues.

Another thing I love about The Melting Pot is their drink menu. In fact, one of the first things you notice when you walk through the door is their wine room, with bottles stacked floor to ceiling. They’ve got upwards of 15 different varieties and a phenomenal amount of brands. You can also get your favorite cocktails, or try one of their house specialties.

In addition to the Big Night Out packages, they also offer a variety of special nights, such as “Ladies’ Night Out”, which is a really great excuse to get the girls together. (Like I need an excuse, right?) Special events generally include discounted drinks and/or other menu items.

If a full dinner isn’t what you’re looking for, you can always opt for my favorite, cheese and chocolate. Choose your favorite cheese fondue from their a la carte menu, and follow it up with a chocolate fondue from the dessert menu.

The entire menu is available on their website, and I challenge you to read through it without salivating, at least once. You can also join their mailing list on the website, and receive a coupon for a free chocolate fondue!

The Melting Pot is the place to go if you’re celebrating anything, from an anniversary to a birthday, or even just to celebrate the fact that you have a babysitter for the night. They’ve got small intimate booths for two as well as larger tables, and even a small room to accommodate larger parties.  Trust me, make a reservation before you go. Generally, you can make a reservation for the same night, but for special weekends, like Valentine’s Day, you’ll want to call several weeks ahead to make sure you get the time and day you want.

When you make your reservation, they will ask you if you’re celebrating anything with them, and if you are, don’t be shy. My husband and I ate there for our anniversary and got glasses of champagne to toast, as well as an anniversary card upon our arrival.  It’s those little things that set The Melting Pot apart, even above and beyond their unique and fabulous cuisine.

I could write about The Melting Pot forever. It really is one of my favorite places to go. Keep it in mind for your next special occasion, date night, or girls’ night out.

The Melting Pot is located at 190 West Main Street in Somerville, and the phone is 908-575-8010 (please call after 12 noon.) Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 5 to 10 pm; Friday, 5 to 11 pm;  Saturday, 4 to 11 pm; and Sunday, 2 to 10 pm.
