Labrador Retriever is Most Popular Breed

But the mighty bulldog pushes its way into the Top 5, as the American Kennel Club releases the annual list that gets everyone talking. Share your photos of your favorite breed!

The American Kennel Club released its annual list of the most popular breeds in America, and for the 22nd year in a row, the Labrador retriever is Number 1.

The 2012 Top Ten list had a few shake-ups, as the Yorkshire terrier dropped to sixth place and the bulldog moved into fifth. The golden retriever and beagle also swapped spots between 2011 and 2012.

"Bigger breeds are making their move," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson in a press release. "The popularity of the pint-sized, portable pooch just gave way to a litter of larger breeds in the Top 10. These predictable, durable, steady breeds, like Labs and Goldens, are great with kids and offer the whole family more dog to love.

Here is the full list:

Here is the AKC's ranking of all 177 breeds that it recognizes.

My Black Lab, Abraxas, has been gone for more than 25 years, but he'll forever remain in my heart as the most loyal friend I've ever had. My fondest memory is coming home from work each night, settling into my recliner to read the papers and having him jump onto my lap. After greeting me at the door, he would then sit by my chair until until I plopped myself into it. Sure, he was a load, but I didn't have the heart to chase him off. Often, as I paused in my reading, I would look right at him. This would always prompt a big slurpy kiss on my face. We all know that Labs love everybody, especially kids. Their tails never stop wagging and can become a dangerous weapon if you happen to be in the way. Obviously many folks share my love for these beautiful, gentle animals. Have I had other dogs since? Sure, but there was only one Abraxas.
