Disaster Response Organization Sets Up at WCC for Hurricane Sandy Survivors

The World Renew Disaster Response Services volunteers will be available Friday and Monday.

World Renew Disaster Response Services volunteers will be on hand at Woodbridge Community Center on Friday and Monday for survivors of Sandy who have questions or unmet needs following the storm.

World Renew works with the Middlesex County Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) to provide an Assessment of Unmet Needs of Hurricane Sandy with residents, Shirley Ritsema of World Renew said.

Volunteers will conduct one-on-one interviews with survivors and complete an in-depth survey of their needs, which they forward over to the LTRG.

“This isn't just a 'yes/no' kind of survey/interaction,” Risema said. “Our volunteers are trained to listen and actually will ask residents to 'tell us your story' so we can get the whole picture of their experience and current situation.”

World Renew focuses on a broad range of issues that can still be facing survivors, including structural repairs, the presence of mold, health concerns and financial challenges.

“With the permission of the resident, the information is shared with the Middlesex County LTRG so they in turn can determine what the needs are for the community and begin the process of securing resources to address those needs,” she added.

Those interested can visit the walk-in center at the Woodbridge Community Center from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 19 and 22 or call 732.390.7074 with questions. An additional center will be held at Laurence Harbor Public Library in Old Bridge on July 23 from 1p.m. to 8 p.m.
