About this column:
The dog with Santa is Maggie the Wonder Dog. Maggie, a purebred Norwegian Elkhound, is a refugee from a Kentucky puppy farm who was caged in a chicken coop with other dogs, and kept there to breed. When it was discovered Maggie's puppies had a tale an inch too long for the breed standard, like Maggie, she was slated to be sent to a kill shelter. She was rescued and now lives happily and very well fed in her forever home. Give one of these poor animals a break! If you have the time, the space, and the love to give, rescue a poor animal locally. These pets are waiting for you. Some say that mutts are the best pets in the world, but the real truth is that nothing beats an older dog if you want a happy addition to the family. Cody, an older Labrador Retriever, was surrendered to the Woodbridge Animal Shelter, and he's looking for a new family to love. He's a healthy, happy-go-lucky dog, typical of his breed, and he's not used to shelters - he is very well taken care of, a pet who was truly loved by his former family. Cody is great with children, but doesn't take kindly to other pets in the house. He should be in a one-dog home. Cody is housebroken, has all his shots…
Noah is a six-month-old lab mix who desperately needs to spend his puppy months with a loving family. He's been at the Woodbridge Shelter for months, and the shelter staff and volunteers have no idea why no one has chosen him to become part of their home. Noah goes to weekly training classes where he shows how smart he is and how willing to take instruction. He's a handsome dog, very eager to please, and will make a wonderful pet for the right family. He was found wandering the streets and taken to the shelter. He's done very well; he's neutered and up to date on his shots. He prefers a home …
Cody is an adorable yellow labrador retriever who can't quite figure out what happened to him. He was turned in to the shelter by his owners, and at his age - he's nine - it's hard for the boy to take. Even so, he exhibits the typical lab personality: happy-go-lucky and great with kids. Cody is a big boy and he doesn't seem to get on well with other animals. He'd do best in a sole-pet environment. Cody is neutered and housebroken, and he'd be the perfect pet for the family who wants the fun-loving behavior of a lab, but with the benefit of an older, wiser pet who doesn't need to be trained. …
Sophia has been through the mill. This gorgeous midnight black, long-haired kitty was tied into a bag and thrown into a shopping cart at Petsmart when she was found. The Woodbridge Animal Shelter has been taking of her ever since, and they are trying to help her get over the trauma. They say Sophia is a very sweet cat, and her age is estimated at between three and four years. The volunteers are getting to know her, gauging her temperment, and seeing how she interacts with other felines. The shelter has had her spayed and vaccinated in order to prepare for the new, loving home they know is …
Meet another of the Woodbridge Animal Shelter's Adoptables who is dying for a new home. TK, a 2 year old pitbull with beautiful black and white markings, came to the shelter as a stray. He's neutered, up to date with his shots, and housebroken. This boy is said to be extremely affectionate around people. He should only be in a house with female dogs and no small children. That's because he's still a bit possessive of his toys and is still learning the finer details of being socialized. The shelter says that "bully breeding experience is required" of any potential adopters. TK is a boy who …
Meet our little Annie Banannie, a two-year-old Pit Bull who was rescued from a fighting operation by the SPCA last year. She has spent the last 8 months in physical and mental rehab to get her where she is today. There were a total of 4 dogs confiscated from her "home", and by far Annie was in the worst condition. Her face, chest and legs were torn to shreds. Because her wounds were never treated Annie's physical appearance is not perfect; the left side of her face will never be "normal" due to build of scar tissue. We had some surgery done to reduce the swelling and offer her some comfort …
Rocket, a two-year-old pit bull mix, has had a rough road in his short life. He's been bounced around to several homes, and desperately is looking for the family who will love him and make him theirs. This handsome boy is very friendly and adores children, and he loves to play and goof around. Rocket needs care and attention, and he can be protective of his owners. If you have a fenced-in yard and you want a loyal companion for life, consider bringing Rocket into your family. He is spayed and up to date on his shots. Call 732-855-0600, ext. 5007 to make an appointment to visit Rocket. He is …
How can you resist that face? Sabrina is a pretty four-year-old dog with a sad history in her short life. She came to the Woodbridge Animal Shelter as a stray, and a long scar down her back reveals the hard time the poor pup has endured. Whatever happened to her, she is aggressive towards other dogs, so she needs to be the only dog in an adults-only household with a fenced-in yard. It's unknown if she's spayed. Do you have some love in your heart and the ability to give close, kind care to a poor dog who hasn't known very much happiness? Give the Woodbridge Animal Shelter a call at 732-855-…
