Know a Mommy-To-Be? Destination Baby's Inventory Goes on the Auction Block

The store folded last year. June is the chance to get high-end baby goods for a steal.

Destination Baby was the kind of store to make mommies-to-be drool and grandmas-in-waiting rip out the gold card. A luxury store in the Crosspointe Town Square shopping center, catering to creating the luxe childhood of which dreams are made. Then the Recession of '08 happened, and luxury stores in middle class Woodbridge hit the skids.  Last November, Destination Baby was shuttered amid bankruptcy proceedings. But come Wednesday, June 6, expectant mothers and the families that love them and the coming baby can pick up some high-end baby items for a song. Maybe. That's because the store fittings, fixtures, and tons of baby merchandise left behind when the store closed will go to the highest bidder. Caspert Management, an "industrial, …

Boscov's to Open in Woodbridge Center Next Year

The family-owned midlevel retailer may be setting up shop in the old Fortunoff's anchor store in 2013.

Looks like the old Fortunoff store in Woodbridge Center isn't going to be vacant anymore. Boscov's, one of the last of the family-owned department store chains in the country, announced today they'll be moving into Woodbridge Center by August of 2013.  "Woodbridge Mall in particular represents an exciting opportunity for Boscov’s," said store chairman and CEO Albert Boscov in a statement. "[It]...provides us with excellent locations in great markets.” The store announced that they'd be moving into a 180,000 sq. ft. space, although the vacant Fortunoff store - the most likely location for Boscov's - is listed as having 150,000 sq. ft. of retail space still for rent. Neither Boscov's nor Woodbridge Center has announced exactly where they'll…

What Recession? Kitchen Remodeling Firm Thrives in Hard Times

The Solid Wood Cabinet Company just opened a Woodbridge showroom, with great kitchens at discount prices

The home improvement industry has been making a slow, tentative comeback in the past few years, ever since the big recession, the housing bust, and easy credit seemingly ended the days when homeowners had bottomless wallets for remodeling. It hasn't been that way for John Grdinich's firm. When other remodeling companies were hitting the skids, The Solid Wood Cabinet Company was just getting started. The company was born just before home improvement market started bottoming out in 2007, and it's done nothing but thrive since.  That's what "quality, price, and speed" will do, he claimed, citing the company's motto. "It's what we live by. We have six stores now, and next year, we'll be opening 15 more." Business is good, Grdinich said, and …

Can an Employer Force You to Reveal Your Facebook Password?

A state legislative committee approved a bill this week that would bar the practice.

Can an employer force you to reveal your Facebook or other social media password as a condition for getting hired or keeping your job? That issue began to get some attention in March after a statistician in New York reported that during an interview with a potential employer, the woman interviewing him had searched for his Facebook and, upon discovering that it was private, asked him for the password. The statistician, Justin Bassett, refused and left the interview according to the Associated Press. But the story brought to light other instances where employers have sought similar access to social media accounts, and have led several states to consider legislation to ban the practice. California's assembly voted Thursday to approve such …

'Never Give Up': Disabled Mobility Consultant and Athlete Delivers Inspiration

Pete Zarba, the sales manager for Bussani Mobility, has never let a wheelchair stand between him and what he wants out of life

Most people think if they were in an accident and permanently wound up in a wheelchair, their life would be over. Pete Zarba says that's when his life began. "When you become disabled, you can lose your freedom to make choices, you give up a lot of who you are in exchange for a government disability check. It comes at a high price," said Zarba. "You have to give into the system or create your own path." Zarba, now 55, became a quadriplegic at age 20 in a car accident. His legs are immobile, and he has limited use of his arms and hands. It not only didn't stop him, he's an athlete and one of the big motivational speakers in disability arenas, such as the Abilities Expo, a convention geared toward empowering the disabled, held this past …

Woodbridge Fresh Produce Group is a Hit

Members of the Woodbridge CSA are close to getting the best in fresh produce - there's still time to join!

It doesn't get any fresher than the Woodbridge CSA. The brainchld of Carolyn Meeker, the CSA - Community Supported Agriculture - is a program where families and individuals buy a share in the produce of a farm dedicated to the group, and everyone reaps the benefits. Meeker, who joined CSAs in Metuchen and Westfield, started one up in Woodbridge. Slowly and surely, she's gotten Woodbridge and area residents who love organic produce fresh from Central Valley Farm to join in and purchase a share. CSA members will get to pick their produce once a week when the farmer delivers the day's pickings. The season goes all the way into fall, and CSA members get more than their money's worth. Another great addition is that members will be able to …

After 20 Years, Mega Movies is Leaving Brunswick Square Mall

The movie theater at the Brunswick Square Mall will be under new management.

Mega Movies at the East Brunswick Square Mall is no more. On Wednesday, owner Howard Grant informed East Brunswick Patch that mall management would not be renewing its lease after almost two decades. According to a statement from the mall’s management, Simon Property Group, Starplex Cinemas will be taking over the theater’s operation starting Thursday, May 3. The Dallas-based company plans to remodel the theater without business interruption. Changes are expected to include new “luxury” seating and 100 percent digital projection. Grant said he had told mall management that he was moving toward being 100 percent digital in the near future, but needed some time. Grant would not go into details Wednesday regarding the change, but said the …
