Wawa Comes to the Neighborhood with a Groundbreaking Ceremony

Despite a rainy start, officials for the convenenience store and township administrators helped launch the construction of a new Wawa on Monday.

One of two new Wawa convenience stores came a shovel closer to fruition on Monday, when a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Wawa convenience store and a neighboring Aldi Foods supermarket took place in the Woodbridge. The ceremony at the site, located at the intersection of King Georges Post Road and Route 9 at an old car dealership, marked the beginning of redevelopment for the area.

Joining Mayor John McCormac at the ceremony were corporate executives from Wawa, Aldi Foods, and Delco Development.

"I am excited to be part of the rejuvenation process in Woodbridge and to be able to serve the customers here in Woodbridge," said Jim Shortall, director of Store Operations for Wawa in New Jersey. "This will be the first Wawa store in Woodbridge."

Scott Kent, area manager for Wawa, said he was thrilled about this store, and a second Wawa planned for the Mom's Diner and Gem Motel site on Route 1 in Avenel. That location will also include a gas station.

“The project will create more than 100 full-time retail jobs and dozens of temporary construction jobs”, said McCormac.

The new Wawa on King Georges Road will be 5,547 sq. ft. and feature a new giant store design, a first for northern New Jersey Wawa stores.  The Aldi supermarket will be 17,888 sq. ft. in size.  The stores will be surrounded by a resurfaced parking lot, new lighting and new landscaping, the Wawa officials said.

This is not the "first" WAWA store in Woodbridge. There were two or three of them back in the 90's

That was then. Wawa is one of the best run operations around, focusing on service and freshness in every store. Can't wait to dump quick check. They are clueless when it comes to service and cleanliness.

Yeah, it was where the the Latin Surrender Cafe is now. I used to go there all the time! Convenient, really nice people, and super clean! (And great coffee, too.)
