Woodbridge Councilman Admits to Traffic Arrest
Councilman Kyle Anderson said at the December 4 council meeting he had been arrested by Woodbridge police on a bench warrant for an outstanding motor vehicle ticket.
Councilman Kyle Anderson admitted at a Woodbridge council meeting Tuesday night that he had been arrested on a bench warrant for an unpaid traffic ticket.
Anderson reportedly had been pulled over by a Woodbridge patrolman for having a broken tail light in early November. The officer discovered that Anderson had an outstanding ticket for failing to pay for a previous motor vehicle fine.
The councilman was brought into the Woodbridge Police Department and was released.
Bench warrants are issued in New Jersey for contempt of court charges, such as not paying tickets for motor vehicle violations.
Anderson brought up his arrest at the December 5 council meeting. He said that he had forgotten about the ticket, and didn't remember it until he was pulled over for the Woodbridge traffic stop.
The councilman said at the meeting the ticket issues have been resolved.
Anderson could not be reached for comment.
A former Woodbridge Housing Authority commissioner, Anderson was appointed by Mayor John McCormac to fill out the unexpired term of retired Councilwoman Patricia Osborned in January of 2011. He ran for the council seat in September of last year and won.
Anderson is also the first black councilman to serve on the Woodbridge governing body.

Why write a comment and not leave your name. Did you forget? People DO forget things from time to time. It was just a unpaid ticket, no one was hurt!! Get over it!

I can in detail tell you in detail every traffic stop, ticket I received since I started driving. "I forgot" is total BS. Maybe you should be more concerned about his forgetfulness since he is running your town, then my name.

WOW , seems the avarage Joe would have more problems over this issue then the councilman. What does it mean he was brought in and released. I would like to have that treatment , in Woodbridge next time I forget. Was the car towed and impounded?????

Your right, Not putting your name is no big deal. If the way the town is run really bothers you, run for councilman or something next time, but don't forget to put your name on the ballot. Lol

Give credit to Councilman Anderson for making the preemptive announcement about his arrest. At least he got out in front of a story that was bound to come out.
From the talk on the street, there was a lot of other drama at that night's council meeting. A senior citizen was so upset by the dictatorial rules (which seem to be made up on the fly by council members) that he required EMS attention and transport. Some are questioning just how look it took that evening for Acting Council President, Charley Kenny, to call for EMS intervention and response time to the call.
Then too, just to ensure that anyone who dares call attention to anything that doesn’t praise McCormac and Company, Mac may have released one of his pack to attack my bringing monetary donations, in a sealed plastic bottle, to the shelter. Sorry I missed all the yapping, but having been around dogs all my life, one gets use to that sound (see: In breeding circles, a male canine is referred to as a dog, while a female is called a bitch; [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog#Etymology_and_related_terminology}). Then again, if it was a catty outcry, perhaps the correct expression should be meow, meow, not yapping!
The Officer who did his or her job certainly does deserve kudos. Undoubtedly, that individual earned the respect of their fellow officers on the Woodbridge PD, and the praise of many residents of Woodbridge Township. Perhaps, not so much with the higher ups in the McCormac Administration!

To Ms. Bell and to the reader and responders of this article,
Though I understand the desire Ms. Bell has to keep the public informed of the happenings in Woodbridge. I would just appreciate accuracy and fairness. To be fair Ms. Bell did leave a message at my home hoping to gain a quote. Perhaps if she reached me I may have felt like giving one, but you learn a great deal when a person has to make a decision to run with second hand information. He message stated that she was just going to write about what happened and she would not make a big deal. Ms. Bell also forewarned me that the Star Ledger and the Home News Tribune also received the same phone call and that I should be expecting more phone calls. Those phone calls have yet to come and it is my understanding that the Star Ledger has chosen not to write an article on the matter. It is my hope the Home News Tribune will choose to do the same.
The night I made my statement Ms. Bell you were not in attendance. If you were you would have heard that I was cited for driving 74 mph in a 65 mph zone and I made no excuse for that. You would have also heard my explanation that my ticket was misplaced when my vehicle went in for repair. You would have also heard that upon receiving the notification I wrote a letter and mailed it to the department but I was pulled over the next day before it was processed. The next day the department confirmed receipt of my check and letter only it was a day late.....

Kyle,
The ticketing happened in July, the arrest in Woodbridge happened on or about November 11, and the public admission at the council meeting took place on Dec. 4, 2012? Why the long gap?
Who contacted the Star-Ledger to ascertain their position on the story?
Doesn’t it seem odd that the McCormac Administration takes every possible opportunity to promote itself and its town council members, but let a credible news media or a citizen show anything put adulation for the powers to be and OMG, the cries go forth to burn those heretics! Ms. Bell did her job! So did NJ.Com (see: http://www.nj.com/middlesex/index.ssf/2012/12/woodbridge_councilman_kyle_and.html)
In case anyone has failed to notice, many news papers publish statements regarding arrest and other crimes almost immediately after the incident, as can be seen at: http://www.mycentraljersey.com/article/20121005/NJNEWS14/310050066/Police-blotter. So, why wasn’t the arrest of a seating town council news worthy, if the information was ever provided to the news services, at the time of the incident?
Personally, I feel you are a good person and an asset to this community. My opinion of the Administration you serves is another matter.

You are leaving out one important detail of you story, Mr. Maras. You HAD NOT RIGHT TO TOUCH THE PLASTIC JUG CONTAINING THE DONATIONS MADE TO THE ANIMAL SHELTER AS YOU ARE NEITHER AN EMPLOYEE NOR A VOLUNTEER OF THE SHELTER, YET YOU PASSED YOURSELF OFF AS A SHELTER REPRESENTATIVE. In my eyes, that is theft!

For the record, the mayor does not appoint council members. I was appointed but that came from my party and then I was elected but not in September. Although this may seem like semantics, I did not have a broken taillamp, my headlamp was out which both were replaced the next day. The officer that pulled me over followed procedure to the T. I was brought to headquarters processed and paid my fine and released. There were no professional courtesies and none were sought. I am a family man and a community servant and do understand that as a public figure it can be open game on me if I do not do the right thing. Though it is nice to know there are some newspapers out there that are not so anxious to put a picture and story without having accurate information. I never once said I forgot!

Councilman Anderson, for the record, if John McCormac, as the titular head of the Woodbridge Democratic Party had not approved your "Appointment" to the town council, it is highly unlikely you would now hold that high office.

I was taught this by my parents at a very young age -- If you take something that doesn't belong to you, that is stealing, regardless of your intentions. Remember what they say about "good intentions." Perhaps your parents didn't teach you right from wrong when you were a child.
As far as Kyle Anderson's ticket, if you were at the meeting, you would have heard the entire story. He did everything right. The ticket was misplaced during auto repairs. He is a human being and humans make mistakes. He learned a valuable lesson from the situation. Let's move on.

I feel ashamed by some of the comments left here in reference to this article on Mr. Anderson's inccident which caused no harm to anyone but to himself. It's amazing how some people will pick up "rocks" and throw them without looking at their own lives first. I am not justifying how the ticket situation was handle but most of you fail to look at the collateral damage some of your comments are creating. This is a "family" man with children and a wonderful wife and to post such comments on the internet only serves to affect the children invovled when they or their friends read them. This a civil matter that is now resolved as required by law, did you ever stop and think of all the responsibities involved in being a councilman, having a regular job, being active in a cheerleading team for our own children in woodbridge and serving the public at the same time. Why do some people feel the urge to pass judgement so freely on our peers without first looking at their own lives. I know that as a public servant that he has to lead by example but any of us can "forget", "overlook" or procrastinate about something at any given time.

Right now we still have victims of hurricane sandy to worry about and I am sure that many senior homeowners out there could use our help in bringing back some normalacy back to their lives or a neighbor needs help with damages caused by the storm that if you really wanted to care about something important you have the chance to make a difference. Let's not lose sight of the important things the really make a difference in our community and try to refrain from causing any more insult to his children and family for in the long run they are the ones that suffer at the hands of your words. Be true to yourselves and you will see that in the end none of this was worth it. Thanks to all for understanding and enjoy your respective holidays in health and true harmony with all.

Tom - Even if you believe your intentions were good, the fact remains that you should not have taken the jug to the shelter. Once the shelter was unable to accept the jug, you should have brought it back to the business where the funds were collected. The main issue is that you held on to the jug full of donations. You should just recognize that you shouldn't have transported the money. You could learn something from Mr. Anderson. He showed us how to admit a mistake and not try to cover it up. And Marge continually thanks the community for each and every donation and you implying that she doesn't is just wrong.

All that I am asking is that before you write another negative or insulting comment about councilman Anderson is to stare at his picture at the top of this page at think of the faces of his wonderful children that do not appear in the picture possibly looking sad, ashamed and crying over your words due to your lack of compassion. Please don't ruin their x-mas in the name of "drama". Think of how your children would feel if it was you or a family member of yours in the paper instead. Why not replace your comments with well wishes for his kids and family so they can "read" the "good" in you. Let's put an end to this article and it's sad history, thanks.

Part 1 of 2
Ladies, let's keep it real. The point of this article is not weather I stole money, I didn't. In fact, I helped collect and delivery it in response to the shelter's call for money, materials, food, towels, etc. The jug that was delivered to the shelter had a larger handwritten note on it calling for money to help the shelter. I was there when it was written, two days prior to it being delivered to the shelter. Knowing the shelter was in need of funds, the management of the establishment were the jug was on display encouraged me to drop the jug off, as I was going to be passing the shelter en route to the center of town. To ensure no one could 'legitimately' question if all the money in the jug would arrive at the shelter, it was well sealed by an employee of the establishment. To further ensure the delivery of the jug was duly reported, I contacted an elected township official, who, in turn, contacted the Director of Public Works.
If there is a lesson to be learned here, it is that the old idiom; "no good deed goes unpunished"! applies. Hope the money helped.
As to Mr. Anderson, he stated:"...as a public official, I am held to a higher standard of conduct..." (see: http://www.nj.com/middlesex/index.ssf/2012/12/woodbridge_councilman_kyle_and.html). That is exactly what is happening! How ever unfortunate the incident may be, he broke the law and was arrested. That is no trivial matter.

Part 2 of 2
There are many aspects to Councilman Anderson’s account of the events that lead up to his arrest that bear further scrutiny, e.g., timing, official notification and weeks of auto repairs that left his vehicle with “flickering headlights”.
Despite Mr. Anderson’s hopes that news medias, other than PATCH would ignore his story, it appears other credible news media, such NJ.Com and the Home News Tribune (http://www.mycentraljersey.com/article/20121206/NJNEWS/312060029/Woodbridge-councilman-learns-slow-down-after-arrest-unpaid-speeding-ticket?nclick_check=1) have contact Councilman Anderson and published his commentary about his arrest.
While there is sympathy for Mr. Anderson’s family over the embarrassment of his arrest, he, like Mayor Mack and Assemblyman Robert Schroeder, must bear the responsibility for their actions.
Unfortunately, all too often in the world of politics, it isn’t the crime a politician commits that invokes the most repentance , it is the fact that they got caught that is their real sorrow!

Mr. Anderson,
Complimenting you for being a good person and saying you have done good for the community is my true believe, based on what I know about you and your devotion to family. That opinion does not necessarily apply to your abilities on the town council, nor does it mean I do not believe there is more to your arrest confession than has been told. In that connection, why don't you make all the records of the ticket, letters of notification about, your letter to the other municipality that issued the arrest warrant, etc. public?
You are a seating councilman who votes on how local laws are promulgated and how MILLIONS of taxpayers' $$$$ are spent, and you, based on recent events, can't even take care of your own legal/financial affairs!
Perhaps, John Hagerty can write your next retort. How much worse could he possibly do!

Actually I'm deleting posts. Posts that get deleted engage in name calling and the sort of remarks that get people sued.
Reasons for deleting: If someone has stolen something, file charges against that person. Otherwise, it's libelous. Implying someone is the slur word for a female dog is against Patch's terms of service. That gets deleted.
I believe in giving people the utmost freedom in posting. We're all adults here, right? Can we show some respect for one another?
The alternative is closing comments. I hate doing that. To everyone, please temper your remarks if you feel an overwhelming urge to insult (or be a lot more clever about it.)
Thanks for your cooperation.
N.B. If you have a complaint about how I've deleted comments, please email me at deborah.bell@patch.com. The one poster who refuses to update his email address to one that works should email me as well if he'd like to keep posting on Patch.
