Police are investigating two BMWs that caught fire within hours of one another in neighboring Rahway and Woodbridge on Thursday.

"We don't think they're connected," said Fire Official Frank Dellapietro of the Fords Fire Department whose company responded to one of the fires in the Fords section of the township.

The first fire broke out on East Hazelwood Avenue in Rahway shortly after midnight on Thursday. A 2011 BWM was afire in the rear of All State Power Vac, a hazardous materials cleanup company located on East Hazelwood Avenue.

Rahway Batallion Chief Michael Roberts said the city's fire department responded to the blaze, and that the car was a stolen vehicle registered in New York. The Rahway Police and the Union County Arson Task Force are investigating the fire, Roberts said.

Several hours later, just before 3 am, another BMW fire was reported, this time in Fords. The car was located inside the locked and secured auto compound of JAB Automotive on Ford Avenue, said Dellapietro. The car had been at the facility for repairs on its door lock mechanism, and had also had an oil change.

Because the car was parked closely to several other vehicles, they sustained damage from the blaze, he said. The fire was put out within minutes.

"The fire doesn't appear to be suspicious," Dellapietro said, but it is under investigation.
