Mayor Kicks Off 'We Feed Woodbridge' Campaign for 2012

Mayor John McCormac is encouraging its corporate citizens and town residents to 'do more' because the need in a tough economy to replenish town food banks is so great.

Once again, Woodbridge is asking for the generous help of its residents and businesses.

Mayor John McCormac kicked off the 2012 "Have a Heart" Food Drive, an effort to get businesses and corporate citizens to donate 214 lbs. of food or $214 by Valentine's Day to help replenish depleted township food banks.

McCormac said the languishing economy demands "that we do just a little more."

In an conference at the Woodbridge Community Center, the mayor was joined by the managers of two of Woodbridge's anchor supermarkets, Tim Lockwood of Wegmans and Bill Caulfield of ShopRite, who were there to show their support.

As with last year's Have a Heart Drive, supermarkets donated huge amounts of food to help those in need.

Their efforts are being coordinated by Peter Barcellona, the chairman of the event who helps organize food distribution to the town's free food sites.

"Don’t delay! We need your help now! The cupboards are nearly bare! I know we can count on our Township businesses and businesspersons to lend a hand," McCormac said.

For information on how to donate:

  • Call Peter Barcellona of the “We Feed Woodbridge” Food Bank Committee. All you need at call at 732-855-0600 x5034. He will arrange to pick up food donations with the help of student volunteers.
  • Non-perishable food items can also be dropped off at the Woodbridge Township Public Health Center at 2 George Frederick Plaza between 9 am and 4 pm weekdays.
  • Financial contributions made payable to “We Feed Woodbridge” can also be dropped off at the Health Center or mailed directly to the Woodbridge Department of Health & Human Services, c/o We Feed Woodbridge, 2 George Frederick Plaza, Woodbridge, NJ 07095.
  • Every store, business, businessperson, and resident who participates in the 2012 Valentines Day 2/14 “Have-a-Heart” Food Drive Challenge will be recognized by the Township Administration and Municipal Council at an upcoming public meeting.

First and foremost, it is hoped Mr. Peter Barcellona, chair of the “Have a Heart” Food Drive, together with the “We Feed Woodbridge” Food Bank Committee have a very successful food drive. The needy residents of Woodbridge Township are very fortunate to have ShopRite, Wegmans, other businesses and benefactors who can give in this languishing economy. May all their efforts and generosity be truly blessed!
It may seem disingenuous of me to give credit to the mayor for his part in the food drive and then call into account his taxing, bonding and spending habits in what he acknowledges as a languishing economy. But who is really being disingenuous by saying, "Don’t delay! We need your help now! The cupboards are nearly bare! I know we can count on our Township businesses and businesspersons to lend a hand”; while spending over $1 Million of taxpayer money on a skateboard park and a miniature golf, in this “languishing economy”. How much food could have gone to the “needy” of the community, for just the cost of the McCormac Administration’s recent Reorganization and Swearing- In celebration extravaganza?

My company recieved one of the mayors letters asking for $214. or 214lbs of food for the less fortunate and homeless. The mayor could of saved the cost of postage and put this letter in with the New woodbridge Tax Bill. But I guess it would not go over too good. I dident even know the town had a food pantrie. Dident know we had homeless. I guess we will need to build a multimillon dollar Homeless shelter for them with a director and paid staff to run it. (Sarcasm) I would rather donate to a church's food pantrie. I know Saint James has one.

Nice and shallow Jeff so you think you need to be homeless to need the food pantry? Tom how about every time we post we donate to the food pantry? Jeff did you make it to St. James yet?

Was referring to timing of your post, not the merits of giving. Let's hope no one is hungry today.
Happy Easter!
