BOE Agenda: E-Cigs to be Added to Tobacco Ban

All adults will be prohibited from 'vaping' - smoking electronic cigarettes that contain nicotine but no tobacco - on Woodbridge Township school grounds.

There will be no vaping on Board of Ed property, if a school board is revised.

The Woodbridge Board of Education will be looking to change its tobacco prohibition policy at tonight's BOE meeting, slated for 7 pm at Avenel Middle School

The BOE will be adding a ban on e-cigarettes, the electronic cigarettes that don't contain tobacco, but which many adults use to satisfy nicotine cravings. The prohibition will be added to a Board policy on cigarettes and tobacco products, which was initially adopted in 1978 and last revised in 1994.

The policy, as it will be changed, will read, "smoking shall mean all uses of tobacco, including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, and pipes, and the inhalation of vapors from electronic smoking devices, including electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes."

The ban of e-cigarettes will join that of the use of tobacco in school buildings, on school grounds, at school events, and on school buses by all adults, including teachers and other school personnel.

E-cigs do not produce smoke, like traditional cigarettes, and they aren't lit. The user exhales water vapor after puffing on the object.

Tonight will be the first reading for the policy change.
